Artist Statement
Some of my fondest childhood memories are of tending my grandmother's flower
garden and greenhouse in her company. We shared a sweet affinity for nature's
gifts, and this is what inspires me to capture the colors, the shapes, and a
sense of timelessness on paper.
I choose subject matter by what delights and ignites my imagination: from the
majestic Lake Champlain outside my studio window, to the gorgeous rolling Green
Mountains, to the delicate web of intricate flowers growing in my garden. To
capture the beauty of the moment, I paint quickly and let paint and water hold
that moment in time. The shimmer of the sun as it reflects off the water, the
afterglow of an exquisite sunset, the daily dance of the clouds, or a garden
flower swaying in the breeze. Each moment in nature excites my desire to capture
a memory.
Over the years I've had the opportunity to study with many of Vermont's talented
artists. To date, the greatest influence on my style and body of work has been
my teacher and mentor, Lisa Beach, of Stowe, Vermont.
