ARTIST STATEMENT OF TERRY A. LUND

I paint for the pure love of holding a brush in my hand and being able to see well enough to put paint to canvas.  A medical condition left me blind for several years.  I am thrilled that the vision in one eye is now clear enough to paint again.  Also being color blind has made it necessary for me to create a system of color understanding and application that works for me.  I hope to continue painting and improving my art in the coming years.

I have always taken art classes, and continue to attend workshops to improve my technique.  When my vision prevented me from seeing well enough to paint, the Vermont Division for the Blind allowed me to attend the Vermont Academy of Floral Design and as a result, I opened my own shop.  My business, Lavender & Silk, allowed me to create customized silk floral designs.  I poured all of my creativity into these designs.  I created and maintained my own web site, by the same name, and was successful maintaining a customer base from all over the country.  Since regaining some vision, I am excited to be able to be a successful artist again with brush to the canvas.

I have belonged to several art groups, have exhibited at several shows, and also had a one-woman show.  I feel very fortunate to be a member of Island Arts and CIAO.  Belonging to these artist organizations has alowed me to interact and share with other artists and to continue to show and market my work.

`        I enjoy working with the following mediums:  sketching, pen and ink (stippling), watercolor, oil and acrylic.  Presently, I am focused on acrylics.  The consistency gives me personal leniency in whatever project I am working on.  Also, the fact that acrylics are water-based, allows me to work quickly and layer paint without needing to wait days for a project to dry.

My current works are focused on landscapes, portraits and animals.  Landscapes are very free and flowing and I love that I can "just paint."  Painting people and animals is more difficult and requires several sketches, and more precise, brushwork.  I am very interested in painting the visible relationship between mother and baby animals.  I am challenging myself to paint a series of animals of different species, as well as portraits of interesting faces.  My present works-in-progress are of my niece and a mare and foal.  The sketches are finished and I am painting!
